Potting Mix,saved cell packs and trays
Ive been using jiffy pellets and germinating trays/flats to start seeds.
$8.00 at Home Depot
Not always do I germinate in the starter trays but always use the pellets.
1st-expand the pellets in the tray provided.
2nd-use left over 4-cell packs (containers) from the garden mart and fill with damp potting mix then place pellets in center.
Place 4 cells in tray also left over from garden mart(flat bottoms).
8 cell packs will fit in one tray, making 32 plants.
Just like the flowers you purchase at the garden mart.
Can germinate in trays provided then transplant.
3rd-make a hole in each cell with your finger and add the expanded pellet.(see #2)Before or after germination.
4th-make sure the top of pellet is wide open then add seeds.

How to Germinate
Cover with the clear top provided with the Jiffy seed starting trays. Try and keep in 80 degree location untill they germinate. Or to speed things up put on top of a heating pad and just keep turning it on when you think of it(don't let them dry out). The pad is good for seeds like cannas.
(see # 3 and # 4)
Now watch them sprout.

Now under the Lights
Under cheap fluorescent lights (not grow lights)set with a timer for 16 hours a day.Keep moist. Don't go more than 3 days without checking the moisture and the height of the lights. Keep lights within 2 inches over the plants otherwise they get leggy.
Now wait 5 to 8 weeks.
(see # 5)
Harden off then plant outside
(see # 6)
I never use fertilizer.(because it was in the potting mix.But can after a few weeks in the ground.
